Grosse Cloche de Bordeaux

The great bell of Bordeaux is the belfry of the old city hall . The door and towers, called the Great Bell are classified under historical monuments by order of 12 July 1886. This is one of the few monuments civilians (with Cailhau door ) that the city keeps the Middle Ages .

It was built in the fifteenth century on the remains of the ancient Porte Saint-Eloy (also called Porte Saint James) of the thirteenth century (backed by the St. Eloi Church of the twelfth century ), open the bulwark of thirteenth century and passed under which the pilgrims of Saint Jacques en route to Compostela . Hence the name of the next street St. James, St. James is the Gascon name of St. Jacques .
